On October 29, 2012, Superstorm Sandy ravaged the Jersey Shore, decimating
homes, businesses and lives. Despite the daunting devastation, the tenacity
of this community shined as people bonded together in what Pastor Michael
Turner of United Methodist Church in Sea Bright, NJ (one of the towns hardest
hit) referred to as “the new normal”. Neighbors helping neighbors, as volunteers
emerged from all over the country as well as locally. Even those who lost much
contributed what they could in the still ongoing recovery and restoration of our
much loved shoreline.

The Garden State Film Festival opened their annual event on April 4, 2013 with
an evening to support and salute our every day heroes and volunteers who gave
much during the storm and in the recovery efforts. Eight cameras chronicled this
celebration, the first major public event in Asbury Park, NJ, not quite 6 months
after Sandy. The production was produced and directed by Lauren Watson
during production, and produced, directed and edited by Terri Barbagallo during
post production, with a compelling and inspirational song written by Lori Draz,
and Executive Produced by Diane Raver, all crew involved in this production
were affected by the hurricane and donated their time and effort out of love
for the community in which we all live. The evening facilitated the donation of
$80,000 to help Hurricane Sandy victims, and screened in 2013 at Algonquin
Arts Theatre, Manasquan, NJ and TEDx Navesink.

“One Light” is a music video which honors the everyday heroes in tribute, and
also promotes awareness that help is still needed as our community still suffers
from much devastation that struck almost 2 years ago. Much has been restored,
but businesses still sit empty and destroyed, funding has still not been received
or has proven insufficient for homeowners’ need to rebuild or raise their homes
according to post-Sandy guidelines.
